Case Study: Data Fusion for Food Chains

Project Overview

Project Name: Meaningful Vision – DataFusion for Food Chains

Business Problem: This project addressed the challenge of fragmented data within the food chain industry. By integrating data from various food chain websites, including product details, prices, visits, and promotions, Meaningful Vision aimed to create a comprehensive data visualisation tool. This tool would empower informed decision-making by providing real-time and historical data trends.

Project team: Business Analyst, React and Python Developers, Project Manager and Dev ops

Timeline: 18 months of iterative development

Data Acquisition and Preprocessing

Data Sources: Websites of different food chains and Google Analytics

Challenges:

Dynamic Content: Extracting data from websites with dynamic content and JavaScript rendering required the use of tools like Selenium, which simulates user interactions to extract data.

Rate Limiting and IP Blocking: To avoid overloading websites and being blocked, proxies and IP rotation techniques were employed.

Website Changes: Frequent updates to food chain websites’ structures necessitated continuous adjustments to the data scraping code.

Central Framework: The process lacked a unified framework for managing data collection from over 100 sites, making it less robust and more susceptible to failures.

Data Preprocessing:

Missing data was imputed using appropriate techniques – median for numerical data and mode for categorical data.

Date formats were standardised across all datasets, and duplicate entries were removed.

Data Analysis and Modeling

  • Data Exploration Techniques: Statistical methods were used to analyse the collected data, with visualisations created to present insights in an easily digestible format.

Deployment and Results

  • Insights Utilisation: How the data insights helped food chains with:
    • Price Optimisation: Analysing competitor pricing and customer behaviour to set optimal prices for their own products.
    • Demand Forecasting: Predicting future demand for specific products based on historical trends and competitor activity.
    • Targeted Promotions: Identifying popular items and customer demographics to design effective promotional campaigns.
  • Integration with Final Product: The data model was integrated into the tool using APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that allow applications to communicate and exchange data. Additionally, dashboards would be created within the tool to display key metrics and trends visually.
  • Success Measurement: The project’s impact on data-driven decision-making could be measured through various metrics, such as:
    • Increased Sales: A rise in sales revenue after implementing data-driven pricing and promotion strategies.
    • Reduced Costs: Lower operational costs achieved through optimised inventory management based on demand forecasting.
    • Improved Customer Satisfaction: Offering targeted promotions and catering to customer preferences based on data insights.

Conclusion

The DataFusion for Food Chains project demonstrates how fragmented, high-volume data from across the food retail ecosystem can be transformed into a single, powerful intelligence platform. By combining scalable data acquisition, robust preprocessing, and advanced analytics, Meaningful Vision enabled food chains to gain real-time visibility into pricing, demand, and customer behaviour across more than 100 data sources.

This approach allows businesses to move beyond intuition and toward truly data-driven decision-making improving profitability, operational efficiency, and customer experience in a highly competitive market.
